Yes pugs shed a lot... this is a double coated breed! We recommend regular brushing, purchasing of dog hair rollers, and clothes the same color as your pug ![]()
Do pugs have breathing problems?
Pugs are known as Brachycephalic Breed.
Most people are not familiar with the term "Brachycephalic," but if you own a Pug, Boston Terrier, Pekingese, Boxer, Bulldog, Shih tzu or any one of the other breeds with "pushed in" faces, you should become familiar with this word. The word comes from Greek roots "Brachy," meaning short and "cephalic," meaning head.
Brachycephalic dogs have been bred so as to possess a normal lower jaw, that is, one in proportion to their body size, and a compressed upper jaw. In producing this cosmetic appearance, we have compromised these animals in many important ways and you, as an owner, must be familiar with the special needs of your pet.
Altogether, the upper airways of the brachycephalic dog compromises his or her ability to take in air. Under normal conditions the compromise is not great enough to cause a problem; however, an owner should take care not to let the dog become grossly overweight or get too hot in the summer months. Be aware of what degree of snorting and sputtering is usual for your individual pet plus, should your pet require general anesthesia or sedation, your vet may want to take extra precautions or take radiographs prior to assess the severity of the syndrome. Anesthetic risk is higher than usual in these breeds, though under most circumstances the necessary extra precautions are readily managed by most animal hospitals.
About Our PUGS
How much do you charge for a puppy?
This depends on a few factors.... are you looking for a show/breed Pug or a Pet ?
If you want a wonderful pet that you are NOT going to breed, and you have spayed/neutered by 6 months of age we charge current market value for our pets. Color and sex is not a factor.
If you would like a Pug too show, and breed the price starts at $1000.00 Depending on the pedigree of the parents and conformation of the Pug being purchased.
Do you make me sign a spay/neuter contract for a pet?
YES YES YES... We want all pups that are purchased as pets to be just that PETS.
Just because a dog has AKC papers does NOT mean it is good to breed or able to show. We aim to better our line of Pugs with each breeding, this includes spaying and neutering of Pugs who do not meet the standard.
How many litters a year do you have?
Well depends on what our goal is that year... most years 2 litters..some years we may have 3 litters for the whole year.
We breed for ourselves first... looking for improving our breeding and showing Pugs. Only about 1% of the pups will make our cut, so the rest we place in responsible pet homes.
Yes,
Currently we are working on producing a better black pug, we do not have breed/show blacks yet. We hope to be closer to that goal by the end of 2010. Our Black Pugs make wonderful pets, and have been calm and great huggers.
Currently we have wonderful Fawns we are very proud of, and have found they make wonderful snugglers.
NO
We would love to sell someone a pup if they meet us first... and fly home with their pup in the cabin. We have a rule....
WE MUST MEET YOU IN PERSON FIRST... YOU MUST MEET OUR PUGS AND US IN PERSON BEFORE WE WILL LET YOU HAVE A PUP.
We understand this maybe a pain in the butt if you live hours from us... but... it is for your safety as much as for our pugs well being. We want to make sure it is the best home possible for our pups.
If you have come and visited us, and when the pup is ready to go home, you want us to deliver the pup too your home.. that is a possibility just ask. We do charge for gas, to you and back.
How often are your dogs at the Veterinarian
My pugs are at the Veterinarian’s very little. We go to the Vet to have Eye CERF done once a year, and regular vaccinations. We have never needed a C-section (knock on wood) but sometimes have X-rays to see how many pups we maybe having. I have very seldom had any reason to visit the veterinarian due to health problems. We have been blessed so far.. and hope to continue that way.
I don’t keep a waiting list. Those people who email me, and i don't have or expect pups I usually try to refer them to the breeders listed on our link page. Those that really keep bugging me by email or IM will get a puppy.:D
Not till i have puppies born..... then i go through the wait list that have been submitted via email. After we have talked and agreed that a pug pup is right for your family, we ask you put down $300.00 non refundable to hold the pup till it is ready to go home. We accept this deposit in the form of cash (we provide a receipt) , US Postal Money Order or via Paypal . The deposit is always non-refundable because after you change your mind, I have to try to sell the puppy again. I could have sold the puppy to another purchaser while I held it for you.
How old are your puppies before you let them go to their new homes?
Pugs are very late to mature compared to other breeds. Most dogs might be ready for their new homes at 8 weeks. Pug puppies are not ready until about 9 -12 weeks
Pugs are very late maturing, and don’t seem ready to leave their littermates and mothers until later than most breeds. Also, no matter how careful people are, many of these puppies get hurt when let go to their new homes that early. Pug puppies don’t seem to bond any less with their new people at 12 – 16 weeks, because at that age they are just starting to become really independent. So … It depends on how the puppies mature, & how many children are in the home & what age they are, and how "doggy" experienced the adults are. Remember just like human kids, not every child is ready to leave mom and dad at 18 ...Please remember if you have to wait a bit longer for your pup, we are NOT trying to be jerks.. we are looking out for the pups health and welfare, and trying to provide you with a best friend who does not have issues.
I am Canadian, will you let me have a pup?
Why yes we will... we are very close to the Canadian border, and in several times a year visit friends in Ottawa area. If you meet our requirements, we maybe even able to deliver your pup when it is ready. We have never had problems with Customs.
Do you offer a written health guarantee with all of your puppies, if so how long?
Currently we offer a 2 year health guarantee with all our pups... as we continue improving our breeding, and health testing we plan on making that longer. Please remember for anyone purchasing dogs in New York State, the laws here state all persons selling a puppy must guarantee the congenetical health for a min. of 1 year.
Do the pups go home with health records?
Yes... you will have a health record booklet...
It will have recorded all the pups vaccinations (usually 2 vaccines) and all the de wormings done. We de worm pups at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 weeks if still here.
If you live close enough we will provide vaccinations (DHPP) free for life.
Why do we need to make an appointment to see your pugs and family?
Well first we have jobs, and kids in school.... so we need to make sure we are all home. Second we have a family schedule , with kids ranging from mid teens to Elementary school.... we have strong family values and believe first and foremost our kids come first... so we NEVER schedule visits in the evening, or on days we have an event with one of our kids. We also never take or make calls after 7pm... as this is an important time to be with our kids.
Have you seen any genetic diseases in your pugs?
It would be impossible for any breeder (of anything) to breed without having "something" come up. These are living animals. We aren’t selling cars.
If you find any breeder who tries to tell you that they haven’t seen genetic diseases in their dogs RUN don’t walk away from them. When
something goes wrong they will blame you because they can’t conceive that THEIR dogs could be anything but perfect. Some breeders seem to think that "genetic disease" is what all other breeders dogs get (and these breeders are the first the spread the word about anything they hear about the other breeders dogs –jealousy or insecurity, maybe). These breeders are very bad news to other responsible and honest breeders, to purchasers who want to buy a dog, but especially to a breed.
We ask as the owner to keep us updated on your pugs health, and with pictures, this helps us breed a better pug. If your pug develops an issue at 5-6 years old and you never tell us, we can't have sibling notified or parents looked at.
